Sufjan Stevens' 2023 Album! Asthmatic Kitty will release Sufjan Stevens' new album, "Javelin," on October 6th. "Javelin" is his first vocal-led solo album since 2020's "The Ascension," and his first full singer-songwriter mode work since 2015's "Carrie & Lowell." The album, and each song within it, is a masterpiece that fully encapsulates Stevens' 25-year career, bridging all his previous approaches.
"Javelin" occasionally has the feel of a large-scale album production, but it is distinctly different. While there are certainly touches of the lushness of a 1970s Los Angeles studio, almost all the sounds here were created by Stevens alone in his home. Close friends adrienne maree brown, Hannah Cohen, Pauline Delassus, Megan Lui, and Nedelle Torrisi provide harmonies on many tracks, and Bryce Dessner plays acoustic and electric guitar on "Shit Talk." Of course, Neil Young wrote the gentle and mysterious album closer, "There's A World." While "The Ascension," hailed by The New York Times as "a cry of despair and a prayer for salvation," used brilliant yet urgent electronics to shape the moment, "Javelin" begins like a self-portrait, detailed yet plain. This is Stevens' most intimate work, reminiscent of "Seven Swans" or "Carrie & Lowell."
Each song on "Javelin" begins small. Sparse acoustic guitar notes, the muffled patter of a closed piano, cascading, shimmering arpeggios. These small sounds are Sufjan Stevens' call to confession on "Javelin," an invitation to a close friend. And of course, there is the soft yet powerful and captivating voice that runs through the career of Sufjan, one of the most compelling songwriters of this century. His voice seems to be fueled by the very scenes of hurt and hope he is about to share, scenes that have inspired Sufjan for decades. On "Javelin," musical breadth and emotional breadth are paired, with a lifetime of emotion woven into not only these 42 minutes but also into each song.
