The seventh episode, "The Old Scientist," directed by Jonathan Frakes (also known as Riker), features a fusion of animation and live-action.
Characters Boimler and Mariner from "Star Trek: Lower Decks" slip from the 24th century into the live-action world, with voice actors also performing in live-action scenes.
In the previous season, costume play was popular, but this time, in Episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody," almost the entire episode is a musical, with the crew's singing echoing throughout the ship.

**Story**
To save the vice chief, Una, who has falsely claimed her origins and is on trial by the fleet, Captain Pike requests her childhood friend, a human rights lawyer, to defend her.
