The front features the paulownia flower and leaves, along with the characters "日本国" (Japan) and "五百円" (500 Yen). The back displays the manufacturing year, with bamboo leaves above and below, and small branches of citrus on the sides. The font of the "500" on the reverse is derived from the 500 Yen banknote.
The material is white copper composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel. It is naturally larger than the 50 Yen and 100 Yen white copper coins made of the same alloy. After considering ease of handling, distinguishability from other coins, and balance with high-value foreign coins, the diameter was set at 26.5 mm. The actual measured thickness is 1.85 mm.
The rim features the anti-counterfeiting technology of repeatedly engraved "NIPPON ◆ 500 ◆" characters.
This was the first time this technology was adopted since the founding of the Mint.
Because the orientation of the engraved characters around the circumference is not aligned with the front and back, roughly half of the coins will have the "NIPPON ◆ 500 ◆" characters oriented so that the top side is the obverse, and the other half so that the reverse is on top, allowing correct reading of the characters in either orientation.
History:
With the circulation of 100 Yen coins exceeding 60% of all coins and the rapid spread of vending machines, higher denomination coins were in demand. As a result, this coin was issued as an unusually high-value coin on a global scale.
The issuance of this 500 Yen white copper coin as regular currency was the last of its kind issued as temporary supplementary currency.
Due to frequent counterfeiting incidents, issuance was discontinued in 2000 (Heisei 12), replaced by the 500 Yen nickel brass coin.
