オーディション番組「American Idol」第2シーズンの優勝者ルーベン・スタッダードから届けられた初のフル・アルバムは気取らない仕上がりで、彼のファンを喜ばせること間違いなしだ。スタッダードは、ルーサー・ヴァンドロスに代表されるメインストリームのR＆Bシンガーのような歌いっぷりを見せる。本作では、ヴァンドロスの十八番であるレオン・ラッセル／ボニー・ブラムレット作の「Superstar」をカバーしているほどだ。その他のなじみ深い楽曲としては、短縮されているとはいえ、なかなかの出来ばえと言えそうなアル・グリーンの「How Do You Mend a Broken Heart」や、ビリー・ホリデイがアルバム『Lady in Satin』で歌っていた忘れがたい名曲「For All We Know」がある。
本作にしばらく耳を傾けていれば、成功を収めたにもかかわらず、ルーベンが変わっていないことを確信できるだろう。実際、彼の物腰は控えめで魅力的だ。ただし、リスナーに与える感動の大きさに関しては控えめとは言いかねる。番組のにわかファンのミーハーさに迎合した部分も多そうな本作だが、デビュー作として完全に納得できるアルバムと言えるだろう。
