This Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Alpha E-mount retractable zoom lens has a focal length of 24-75mm in 35mm equivalent. Covering from wide-angle to mid-telephoto, and especially due to its unique retractable mechanism, it becomes very compact, making it an excellent everyday lens. When powered on, the lens extends, but when turned off, the lens is 1.2 inches (30mm) and fits in a pocket. When extended, the zoom range is surprisingly wide, and the operation ring with dual functions allows manual focus adjustment and zooming. The power zoom capability in AF mode and the internal stepping motor provide fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus, which is beneficial when shooting videos with this lens.
Sony E-mount lenses are compatible not only with NEX cameras but also with NEX Handycam camcorders. The built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilization system reduces camera shake, especially useful when tracking moving subjects in video or taking photos in low light. This OSS provides approximately 4 stops of correction based on shutter speed calculations, ensuring steady shots in any shooting situation.
