■ Details
This currency was issued from 1922 (Taisho 11) due to revisions in the Currency Act.
Affected by the post-World War I recession, and in line with the collapse of international commodity prices, silver prices, which had been soaring in the 1920s (Taisho era), began to stabilize. Consequently, the weight of silver coins was further reduced in this revision.
The design of the silver coins established at this time adopted a slightly modified version of the obverse design (still in clerical script) from the Yatagarasu silver coin, excluding the Yatagarasu on the reverse and the Roman alphabet notation.
Manufactured for many years until 1938 (Showa 13), it was affectionately nicknamed "Giza" (meaning reeded) during its circulation and became one of the coins deeply ingrained in the minds of the Japanese people at the time.
