[Shosha-zan Mani-den]
At the bottom of the slope from Jomyoin, there is the "Yubashi Bridge." Crossing this bridge, donated by Himeji Castle lord Tadamasu Honda, you will see the Mani-den above. This Mani-den is the central place of pilgrimage for Shosha-zan, and there are tea houses in front of it.
Climbing the stairs in front of the building highlights its grandeur. The Mani-den is located halfway up the cliff, with the rock behind it carved out, supported by high scaffolding in the front, and featuring a stage.
This construction style is called "Kakezukuri" and is the same as that of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto.
Four years after the Venerable Shoku established his hermitage in Shosha-zan, in the first year of Tenroku (970), a celestial being descended upon a single cherry tree growing halfway up the cliff and chanted, "Keishu Shoboku Nyoirin..." The Venerable Shoku, seeing this, is said to have cut off a branch and had a 1.5 shaku (approximately 45 cm) six-armed Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu carved at the root. He then built a hermitage measuring 3 ken (approximately 6 meters) square around it and named it "Nyoi-do." It was destroyed by fire in Taisho 10 (1921) and rebuilt in Showa 8 (1933).
