Description: This is an unusual "ichimatsu" (checkerboard) patterned tatami mat cover, with the pattern only on the edges. Simply laying this cover can refresh a tatami room. Use it to refresh tatami that has faded from sun exposure, or as a cover to protect new tatami from getting dirty. The manufacturer has modified their looms with proprietary technology to create the ichimatsu pattern using only the natural colors and weave of the material. Recommended for those who find plain tatami covers uninspired and desire a more luxurious feel. Igusa from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture (a region known for igusa production) is used, with lengths of approximately 110-115 cm. Of this, approximately 88 cm is utilized. Typically, the edges of the tatami mat have a strong whitish hue. (This is not due to sun fading, but is the natural color of the root and tip ends of the igusa.) This characteristic difference in color between the root and tip ends is utilized to create the ichimatsu pattern. (Therefore, the ichimatsu pattern is only present within the range of the white root sections. The center portion will be plain.) Longer igusa is considered higher quality. Igusa has a reddish-brown tip, a white root, and a green middle section. Domestic igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture) is used. Domestic igusa is thick, has a dense surface, and fine fibers, making it resilient and durable. Igusa has properties such as air purification, humidity regulation, and resistance to dirt. The fabric surface has been treated with "Hiba Essence," extracted from Hiba trees in Aomori Prefecture, using the manufacturer's proprietary technology. Hiba Essence contains hinokitiol, a substance with extremely high antibacterial properties for a natural compound. (Compared to untreated products, it has antibacterial and deodorizing effects.) Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical. *Please note that as this is a natural material and each piece is handcrafted by artisans, there may be variations in shape and slight differences from the stated dimensions.
