Description: This is an unusual Ichimatsu (checkerboard) pattern tatami mat cover, with the pattern only appearing along the edges. Simply laying this cover can refresh a tatami room. Use it to refresh tatami that has been discolored by sunlight, or as a protective cover to keep new tatami clean. The manufacturer has modified their looms with unique technology to express the Ichimatsu pattern using only the natural colors and weave of the material. Recommended for those who find plain tatami covers uninspired and desire a more luxurious feel. Igusa (Japanese rush) of about 110-115cm in length, sourced from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture (a region famous for igusa production), is used. Approximately 88cm of this length is utilized. Typically, the edges of the tatami mat appear strongly whitish. (This is not due to sun exposure, but is the natural color difference between the root and tip of the igusa.) This characteristic difference in color between the root and tip of the igusa is used to create the Ichimatsu pattern. (Therefore, the Ichimatsu pattern is only formed within the range of the whitish root portion. The center section will be plain.) Longer igusa is considered more valuable. Igusa has a reddish-brown tip, a white root, and a green middle section. Domestic igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture) is used. Domestic igusa is thick, has a dense outer layer, and fine fibers, making it resilient and durable. Igusa has properties such as air purification and humidity control, and is resistant to dirt. The fabric surface has been treated with "Hiba Essence," extracted from Aomori Hiba trees, using the manufacturer's unique technology. Hiba Essence contains Hinokitiol, a natural substance with extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects.) Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical. *Please note that as this is a natural material and each piece is handcrafted by artisans, there may be variations in shape and slight discrepancies from the stated size.
