Description: This is a rare Ichimatsu (checkerboard) pattern tatami mat cover, with the pattern only on the edges. Simply laying this cover can refresh a tatami room. Use it to refresh tatami that has been discolored by sunlight, or as a cover to protect new tatami from getting dirty. The manufacturer has modified their looms with proprietary technology to express the Ichimatsu pattern using only the natural colors and weave of the material. Recommended for those who find plain tatami covers uninspired and desire a more luxurious feel. Igusa (Japanese rush) of about 115-120cm in length, sourced from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture (a region famous for igusa production), is used. Approximately 91cm of this length is utilized. The edges of the tatami mat typically have a strong whitish hue. (This is not sun-discoloration, but the color of the root and tip ends of the igusa.) This characteristic, where the root and tip ends of the igusa have different colors, is utilized to create the Ichimatsu pattern. (Therefore, the Ichimatsu pattern is only formed within the range of the whitish root portion. The center part will be plain.) Longer igusa is considered more valuable. Igusa has a reddish-brown tip, a white root, and a green middle section. We use domestically produced igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture). Domestic igusa is thick, has a dense surface layer, and fine fibers, making it resilient and durable. Igusa has functions such as air purification and humidity control, and is resistant to dirt. The fabric surface has been treated with "Hiba Essence," extracted from Hiba trees in Aomori Prefecture, using the manufacturer's proprietary technology. Hiba Essence contains a natural substance called Hinokitiol, which has extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it has antibacterial and deodorizing effects.) Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical. *Please note that as this is a natural material, and each piece is handcrafted by artisans, there may be variations in shape and slight differences from the stated size.
