【What is Sake-tō?】

President Shigeo Shiino III recognized the deliciousness of sake-tō early on, starting development immediately after World War II in 1949 (Showa 24). He succeeded in developing and producing "katsuo sake-tō" from the raw material of salted skipjack tuna that he had been making before. Unlike other seafood processed products, sake-tō has a high preservation ability at room temperature for one year, which led to its widespread acceptance across Japan.

In 1958 (Showa 33), as sake-tō's popularity became established, the company began developing a new product, "maguro sake-tō." The company was the first to succeed in mass production, and as the original tuna sake-tō, it gained popularity for its smooth taste. Today, it is on par with katsuo sake-tō and holds the top share nationwide.

◆History of Sake-tō

Japan has a long-standing culture of foods made from fish and shellfish innards. One such product, "sake-tō," is a fermented food mainly made from the rare parts of tuna or mackerel. Records of its consumption date back about 300 years. It is said to have been named because it makes one want to "steal" sake due to its addictive flavor that makes chopsticks quickly disappear.
