■Additional Product Information■“Shagaku” was a Japanese monthly magazine published by Shogakukan that focused primarily on photography.
It was first published in 1980 (Showa 55) and ceased publication in 1985 (Showa 60).
OverviewFrom the June issue released on April 25, 1980 (Showa 55) to the February 1986 (Showa 61) issue released on December 23, 1985 (Showa 60), a total of 69 issues were published over a period of just over five and a half years.
The format was A4. Each issue had a total of approximately 170–210 pages.
The concept was “Enjoying photography as one enjoys music.”
This also served as the origin of the magazine’s name (a coined term).
Regarding the reason for the suspension of publication, the editor-in-chief noted “various circumstances” in the final issue.
The magazine gained popularity by featuring primarily women—such as actresses—on the cover and in the opening photo spreads, as well as by employing nude photography by famous photographers and models who were the subject of much discussion.
In the early days, posters were included as inserts
Kishin Shinoyama’s “Gekisha” series sold 100,000 copies per issue, and following the success of his 1978 (Showa 53) photo book *Daigekisha: 135 Female Friends*, which became a bestseller, the magazine was conceived and launched as a photography magazine centered on Shinoyama.
The cover of the first issue featured Aiko Morishita, photographed by Shinoyama.——Reference Number: b-11 2603
