Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen comments on this work: "It reflects my personal growth as I've pursued the essence of life and music as I've gotten older." Through 5 original songs by Gustavsen, 2 choral works by Johann Sebastian Bach, a traditional Norwegian church hymn, and the 19th-century British hymn "Near My God, to Thee," Tord, along with his long-time collaborators Jarle Vespestad (ds) and Steinar Raknes (double-b), delves deeply into his unique music that blends jazz, blues, gospel, Scandinavian folk music, and church music. As Tord himself says, "cherishing melody," the group's interplay draws strength from restraint, patiently but simply building the music towards a climax. Meanwhile, the pianist, a master of the trio format, leads with a delicate touch and a subtle gospel glow. "Seeing" is strongly characterized not only by its captivating down-home feeling but also by what Tord calls "efficiency of form." "On this album, you won't find many grand solos. Instead, I've focused my musicality on the interaction and formation of small improvisational parts, striving to 'maximize' basic details. In doing so, this album has turned out to be a cool work, in contrast to recent live concerts where I often perform in more grandiose forms, long suites, combining several themes, or engaging in extended free improvisations. However, what is common to this album is the pursuit of what feels more vibrational and essential in the moment, rather than following a plan or script. Of particular interest is the contrapuntal work between the bass and piano, and the warm, woody, full sound of the double bass," he also commented. Recorded in the fall of 2023 at Studio La Buissonne in the South of France under the production of Manfred Eicher, this is one of the powerful works celebrating ECM Records' 55th anniversary year.
