The Juilliard String Quartet, during their prime and when violist Hilia was a member in the 1960s, took four years to undertake the Schumann project, which is fully captured in this two-disc set. It includes three string quartets, as well as a piano quartet with Gould and a piano quintet with Bernstein. These recordings are from the same period as their first Beethoven complete recordings, and their rigorously refined beautiful tone, exquisite ensemble, and logical structure express an ideal of string quartet performance that is truly inspiring. The flexible and supple Bernstein, the sharply condensed tension created by Gould, and their ability to bring out the character of their collaborators with flexible musicality are also among their trademarks.
