Although Schubert is known as the King of Songs, he left behind a vast number of piano compositions in his short 31-year life. Most of his small pieces such as waltzes and German dances are said to be based on improvisations performed in front of his friends, and are easy to play for anyone familiar with the piano. Each piece is relatively short and can be repeated during the dance. This disc features variations with the inclusion of Ländler (a rustic 3/4 country dance) and Ecossaise (a Scottish-origin dance) within the German Dances.
Pianist Ryun Yang distinguishes himself by playing both Steinway and 1820s replica fortepianos, adding variety throughout the album. Track 16 combines several drafts; for unfinished pieces, Ryun Yang has added his own completions.
