This Japanese limited color vinyl LP will also be released on Record Store Day 2022! It comes with an obi strip, booklet, and a download card for bonus tracks!!
● Whitney, a Chicago duo consisting of Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, will release their third album, "SPARK," produced by Brad Cook and John Congleton, through Secretly Canadian on September 16, 2022.
"SPARK" reintroduces Whitney as a contemporary syndicate of classic pop. Its 12 imaginative and charming tracks are wrapped in captivating melodies, paisley-patterned Dillabeats, and luxurious electronics, maintaining the warmth and ease found in their early works while shining with a new freshness.
The story of "SPARK" begins with the unexpected success of Whitney's debut album "Light Upon the Lake" in 2016. The soft, distorted psychedelic folk of "Light Upon the Lake" was more widely accepted than they had anticipated. As a result, after years of relentless touring, they felt compelled to follow the same sound for their second album, "Forever Turned Around," released in 2019.
Meanwhile, Max and Julien recognized the need for a bold change. Unexpectedly, the lockdown accelerated this process. Julien states, "We had time just to sit and watch our work grow in real time. We built stronger songs, stronger layers." Max adds, "The way we like to make records is the way we made our first record." Both also could not be unaffected by the overwhelming sense of loss. Max lost his grandfather to COVID-19 in December 2020, shortly after the passing of their mutual mentor, JR White of Girls. However, the key to "SPARK" is that even the saddest songs shine like gentle technicolor dreams. Sublimation. In other words, Whitney's ability to endure long enough until conditions improve.
"SPARK" frequently features "smoke" and "fire," symbolizing two meanings: creating new things and burning away the old. Whitney's situation was precarious in many ways, but they started again from "drying out the past," and after the flames, they discovered a fresh version of themselves, their relationship, and their band. "SPARK" is a testament to patience and rebirth, trusting each other as close friends to carry something to a new place, and to the emotional power of that process.
