New 7-inch from Richard Russell's project! Everything Is Recorded, the collaborative music project centered around Richard Russell, head of XL Recordings and producer, is back with the new song "Porcupine Tattoo." Released with a visualizer, this song is a rustic elegy featuring Noah Cyrus, daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and younger sister of global pop icon Miley Cyrus, and Bill Callahan, an iconic American singer-songwriter. This marks the first collaboration between the two.
This collaboration came about while Russell was in the midst of sessions for his upcoming new album, following his critically acclaimed past works, including his debut album "Everything Is Recorded," which featured artists like Sampha, Ibeyi, Wiki, and Kamasi Washington, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2018. Russell contacted Bill Callahan, an artist he has long admired and who covered Gil Scott-Heron's "I'm New Here" (the title of Scott-Heron's last studio album), with the simple question, "Who do you want to write a song for?" Callahan's answer was "Noah Cyrus." On this single, Callahan's original demo vocals, with a lowered pitch, are layered over sub-bass, further enhanced by Cyrus's clear counterpart vocals. The song was recorded at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles over a week of continuous rain, a place Russell described as "comfortable but haunted." This track follows in the lineage of Russell's work, from "I'm New Here" to Bobby Womack's "Deep River" and Damon Albarn's "History of a Cheating Heart."
