作者の岡本雄司さんは、鉄道模型やミニカーなどで遊んだ子どもの頃の記憶と、大人になってから旅先で見て来た風景を重ね合わせて、この絵本をつくりましたとおっしゃっています。木版画の貼り絵を用いて描き出された絵本の世界には、その言葉どおり、リアリティーがありつつもどこかミニチュア模型を思わせるような温かさと親しさがあります。小さい子は、主人公と一緒になって車にのりこみ、きっと夢中になってくれるはずです。
