前作の「ボレロ」を中心に名曲を揃えた選曲とローカル色を感じさせる音色、洗練され過ぎず荒々しさを残した演奏が話題となった、トレヴィーノ率いるバスク国立管によるラヴェル作品集の第2弾。今作は「マ・メール・ロワ」を中心としたプログラムを、めくるめくような陶酔感をもって聴かせています。通常組曲版の演奏機会が多いこの作品ですが、トレヴィーノはバレエ版の全曲を演奏。より物語に即した精緻な演奏を披露しており、他の作品も含めて前作にも増して緻密な響きが楽しめます。
注目はピエール・ブーレーズによる「口絵」の管弦楽版。これはもともと2台ピアノ5手のための作品で、たった15小節、演奏時間は2分ほどの短い曲です。リチャード・カヌードの「ヴァルダルの詩」という詩集の挿入曲として書かれた作品で、3つの独立した旋律が各々奏でられながら絡み合い、最後は全てが冒頭の旋律に集約されるというもの。ラヴェルの生前に一度だけ演奏され、以降は忘れられていました。この作品を蘇演したのがほかならぬブーレーズであり、オーケストラ版への編曲も行っています。ピアノ版よりも各旋律が際立つとともに、この作品が持つアヴァンギャルドな側面が強調され、たいへん耳に残ります。
