[Rakanji Temple's Five Hundred Arhats]Hokuei-zan Rakanji Temple is lined with 459 stone Buddha statues and was historically so famous that it was said, "If you wish to see your parents, go to the Five Hundred Arhats of Sakumi Hojo." However, during the Tensho era (1573-1592), the area around Sakumi Temple was devastated by war. It is said that Ikeda Terumasa, who became the lord of Himeji Castle at the beginning of the Edo period, rebuilt the adjacent Sakumi Temple.Until now, it was unknown when these stone Buddhas were made. However, a survey in 2015 revealed that Takamuro stone, mined within Kasai City, was used, and that the stone Buddhas were likely carved in the early Edo period. It is therefore suggested that these stone Buddhas may have been created at the time of Sakumi Temple's reconstruction, though it remains unknown who made them, when, or for what purpose.Furthermore, some of the stone Buddhas have features resembling Westerners. Locally, connections to Christians in Kasai or to immigrants who lived in this area in ancient times have been suggested, and many mysteries still surround them.
