東京牛込で幼少期を過ごし、行き交う都電を眺めることが鉄道趣味の原点だった「さっしい」こと笹目史郎少年。その都電を中学1年のときに初めて撮影して以来、当初はハーフサイズのカメラ、やがて一眼レフを持って、昭和40年代の鉄道を追いかけました。そんな10代の筆者の作品から、本書には地方私鉄(東北・関東・中部・近畿・四国地方の28社)と、地方都市(函館・仙台)の公営路面電車、および国鉄(東海道・中央・総武・東北・奥羽・羽越の各本線と支線)などを掲載。地方私鉄には個性的な車両たちが木造の駅舎や車庫の前で休む、のどかな風景が残っています。国鉄には蒸気機関車から新幹線までが揃って活躍しており、時代の過渡期を垣間見ることができます。事業用車までをカメラに収めるさっしい少年の眼差しから、はるばる地方を訪ねた感動と興奮が伝わってくるほか、それぞれの写真に添えられた丁寧な解説により、当時の空気を感じることができるでしょう。
