Product Description

This is a tatami mat cover (ushiki) designed for both aesthetic beauty and durability. It uses linen and cotton threads for the warp, with twice the amount of thread compared to regular ito-hiki weave. The combination of linen and cotton threads makes the threads themselves very strong. Additionally, each thread becomes thicker, creating a distinct texture and a beautiful appearance when woven. Simply laying this cover over your tatami mats can refresh the room. Use it to refresh sun-damaged tatami or as a protective cover for new tatami. We use domestically produced (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, a region known for its rush production) igusa of JAS Class 1 (a superior class of tatami surface) with a length of 135cm or more, which is typically used for tatami surfaces. The carefully selected, high-quality thick and long igusa is woven at high density, making it durable, long-lasting, and providing a comfortable volume against the skin. Approximately 88cm of the 130cm length is used. This is a premium product that uses long igusa, resulting in less white space near the edges. (The white parts are not due to sun damage; they are the colors from the root and tip of the igusa.) Longer igusa is considered more premium. Igusa has a reddish-brown color at the tip, white at the root, and green in the middle. Using more of the good quality green part in the middle results in a stronger and more beautiful finish. As igusa ages and gets sun-damaged, products using more of the green middle part will develop a beautiful, even patina over time. This product is finished with ito-hiki weave, the same weaving method used for tatami surfaces. Compared to soumoku weave, ito-hiki weave has more densely packed igusa, making it more durable. Its smooth surface also makes it resistant to dust accumulation. Ito-hiki weave is recommended for those who want a product that lasts a long time and requires durability. We use domestically produced igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture). Domestic igusa threads are thick, have a dense fiber structure with a thick epidermis, providing excellent elasticity and durability. Igusa has air-purifying and humidity-regulating properties, and is resistant to dirt. The fabric surface has been treated with "Hiba Essence," extracted from Aomori Hiba trees, using the manufacturer's unique technology. Hiba Essence contains hinokitiol, a substance with extremely high antibacterial properties for a natural compound. (It has antibacterial and deodorizing effects compared to untreated products.) It is economical as both sides can be used. *Please note that as this is a natural material and each piece is handcrafted by artisans, there may be slight variations in shape and the indicated size may differ slightly. Thank you for your understanding.
