Detailed Description Building on the success of the more pop-oriented "Permanent Vacation," this 1989 album dispelled any doubts about Aerosmith's unexpected late-80s comeback being a fluke or merely a product of shrewd record company maneuvering. After a decade of unnatural decline and despair, Aerosmith managed to create two albums comparable to "Toys in the Attic" and "Rocks." Key players from "Vacation" (producer Bruce Fairbairn, outside songwriters Jim Vallance and Desmond Child) were still involved, adding to the band's familiar tough pose and providing the impetus for this work from the outset. The Vallance and Child collaboration "The Other Side" and the powerful ballad "What It Takes" are successful, and the album's two great pop-rock classics, "Love in an Elevator" and "Janie's Got a Gun," are entirely from the band's own efforts. It seems the veterans not only learned new tricks but also surpassed their role models. "Pump" is the highlight of Aerosmith's unexpected second chapter, and it is one of their best albums.
