★ Puccini's masterpiece "Tosca," performed as the opening of the 2019/20 season. Set in Rome in 1800, this masterpiece opera depicts the tragic love story of the beautiful diva Tosca and the painter Cavaradossi with Puccini's sweet melodies and dramatic orchestra. This production is conducted by Riccardo Chailly, Music Director of Teatro alla Scala, with a magnificent cast including Anna Netrebko as Tosca, Francesco Meli as her lover Cavaradossi, and Luca Salsi as their nemesis Baron Scarpia. Furthermore, Davide Livermore's impressive direction, utilizing projection mapping and spectacular stage sets, allows for a thorough enjoyment of this suspense drama of love and desire. Netrebko's powerful performance and overwhelming vocal ability as Tosca are truly those of the greatest diva of our time. In the famous aria "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore," she captivates with her rich voice and lustrous singing. Francesco Meli, as Cavaradossi, is an Italian tenor with a soft and brilliant voice. In the climactic aria "E lucevan le stelle" towards the end, he sings with great emotion. Luca Salsi also convincingly portrays the villainous Scarpia. Chailly's profound and masterfully executed performance is also breathtaking.

[Synopsis]
June 1800. This was a time when Napoleon's army was gaining momentum in Europe, the Roman Republic was abolished, and the Papal States were restored. The painter Cavaradossi helps the escaped political prisoner Angelotti to flee. When this is revealed, Cavaradossi is captured by Chief of Police Scarpia and sentenced to death. Tosca, Cavaradossi's lover, pleads with Scarpia to help Cavaradossi, but Scarpia threatens Tosca and demands sexual favors. It is here that Tosca sings "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore." Tosca demands a safe-conduct pass from Scarpia to escape. At that moment, in a struggle, Tosca stabs and kills Scarpia. In the final act, the aria "E lucevan le stelle," sung by Cavaradossi in prison as he is overcome with emotion while writing a letter to Tosca, is the opera's climax. Tosca then goes to Cavaradossi, obtains the safe-conduct pass, and tells him she killed Scarpia. The two rejoice in their brief freedom, but what was supposed to be a mock execution turns out to be real, and Cavaradossi is truly executed. In the end, Tosca follows him to her death, and the opera concludes tragically.
