■Sony Classical has newly signed a contract, and this is the debut album of Tugan Sokhiev, a conductor from Ossetia who is currently attracting the most attention worldwide. It is the first recording with the Berlin German Symphony Orchestra, where Sokhiev serves as chief conductor, and is the first installment of the Prokofiev recording project completed in 2016.
■"Ivan the Terrible" was composed for a film produced by Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein. After the composer's death, it was arranged as an oratorio from music composed by Prokofiev, and was first performed in 1968 under the baton of Abram Stasevich, who conducted the film's soundtrack. Sokhiev also performed this oratorio version.
■This live recording was made during a performance in January 2013, which was a major highlight of Sokhiev's season as music director of the Berlin German Symphony Orchestra. The powerful and thrilling performance beautifully brings out the appeal of the work. The impressive singing by the strong soloists Bolodina and Abdrazakov, as well as the beautiful and dynamic chorus parts performed by the Berlin Radio Choir, are also noteworthy.
