Ohno Bakufu: A Western-style painter. Born in Tokyo. His given name was Yōzō. Studied at Hakuba-kai and Taiheiyō Gaka-kai. Lived in Hyogo Prefecture. Died in 1976 at the age of 87. He is famous for his "Great Japanese Fish Illustrations" (published in six installments from 1937 to 1944, limited to 500 sets), which are said to comprise a total of 72 sets.

The "Great Japanese Fish Illustrations" were sold one print per month with commentary, in a limited edition during the 1930s and 1940s. Initially, he observed fish at aquariums, but soon found that insufficient. He then took to a submersible off the coast of Wakaura to observe fish ecology, creating works with meticulous attention to detail.

He depicted the patterns of scales with fine detail and accurately portrayed their habitats. He vividly depicted not only marine fish but also freshwater fish such as loaches and medaka in vibrant colors.

The entire collection was publicly exhibited for the first time in 2010 at the Himeji City Museum of Art, and then in 2013 at the Tokyo Station Gallery. What is astonishing is the technique described in the sales pitch for this woodblock print collection: "Original Color Woodblock Print, Two Hundred Hand-Pulled Impressions," meaning each print was completed by layering 200 impressions. For comparison, typical Ukiyo-e prints involve about 10 impressions, highlighting how unique this method was. This was made possible by the presence of excellent craftsmen, including carvers and printers.
