The first time I went to see an opera was about 20 years ago, when I was staying near the Metropolitan Opera in New York for an extended period. I actually had little interest in opera, but I remember being very impressed by the atmosphere where guests dressed in tuxedos and dresses, all enjoying champagne and chatting during the intermission. It felt like glimpsing into high society, right? Seeing that otherworldly space was very fun.

Before I started serializing 'Pride,' many women around me said, "I want to go to an opera at least once, but somehow it feels intimidating..." I have always been more interested in depicting the glamorous, unknown world and peeking behind the scenes rather than portraying the everyday life of a nearby older sister, so I thought it would be interesting to use the world of opera as a theme, featuring two contrasting women clashing. I never expected that opera would be so profound and that it would come back to haunt me...

In creating 'Pride,' I gathered songs that seemed necessary for the story from various sources and narrowed them down to famous ones. As a manga artist, I initially tried to follow the story desperately when listening to opera, but eventually I realized that "opera is built around singing, with a story behind it!" and started to enjoy the energetic, dramatic arias and sometimes even the intense sopranos that could feel almost mad. Recently, I’ve had more opportunities to attend opera performances, but sometimes when I go to pop concerts, I think, "Huh? Weren't they better?" I hadn’t paid much attention before, but I realize that opera singers' voices are truly authentic. Also, lately I prepare a minimal story summary before watching an opera, which makes it more enjoyable than before. And in Japan, subtitles are provided, so...

In any case, I hope that people who are not very familiar with opera will listen to this CD and enjoy thinking, "So that aria from the scene in 'Pride' was singing about this," and have fun.

Yukari Ichijo (Ichijō Yukari)
Born September 19, 1949, from Okayama Prefecture. Debuted in 1968 with "Yuki no Serenade," which was a semi-finalist in the first Ribon Newcomer Manga Award. She has created many hit works such as "Designer," "Suna no Shiro," and "Kōkō Kurabu." Her latest work, "Pride," depicting the battle between two women aspiring to be opera divas, is currently serialized in the women's manga magazine "Chorus" (Shueisha).
