This is a wooden craft from Hakucho, a paulownia woodcraft manufacturer in Asakusa, Tokyo, meticulously handcrafted by artisans.
This is a postcard-sized paulownia box that can store New Year's cards and seasonal letters.
The surface has been treated with a "Jidai" finish, a scorched paulownia process, resulting in a deep dark brown color.
This is then combined with "Kimekomi" inlay work.
Paulownia has the function of maintaining a constant internal humidity, making it a suitable material for storing paper postcards.
It also has the characteristic of being resistant to fire, making it a strong wood that can protect its contents in case of emergency.

They create paulownia woodcrafts using their unique decorative technique called "Kimekomi" paulownia inlay.
"Kimekomi" is a technique where auspicious motifs such as bells, gourds, dragonflies, and fans are drawn, carved with a chisel, and then kimono fabric backed with Japanese paper is inlaid into the carving.
This is an Edo-period technique that values the harmony between paulownia wood and kimono fabric.
