【Poet Ronsard’s 500th Birth Anniversary. Thoroughly early music with a focus on period instruments, showcasing vibrant compositions from the same era and modern times】
During the 16th century, a pivotal period in French culture, Pierre de Ronsard (1524-1585), a member of the Seven Stars Poets (Pleiad), demonstrated through numerous masterpieces that elegant poetry could be composed in French rather than Latin, leaving a lasting mark on history. His works not only attracted the attention of contemporary polyphonic musicians pursuing the art of vocal music but also continued to inspire many composers from the 19th century onward, who set his poetry to music. The French early music ensemble Dous Memoire, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Ronsard’s birth, has produced a two-disc album featuring vocal works set to his poetry, performed with precise expression across a wide vocal range by renowned singer Marc Moyon. Dous Memoire performs polyphonic chansons from the time of the poet’s life, while Moyon performs songs from the 19th century onward. On Disc 1, poems recited alongside lyra da braccio are followed by examples based on the same poem by multiple composers. On Disc 2, listeners can compare the variety of piano-accompanied songs from mid-19th century composers like Gounod and Gouvy to those from Ravel and the French Six, showcasing the diversity of the art song. Moyon’s reliable accompanist Anne Le Bozec’s piano, made by Pleyel in 1905, offers a transparent and nuanced beautiful tone. Recording engineer Jean-Marc Renaud, with extensive experience in medieval and piano music, captures the charm of various period instruments along with the vocal performances. The booklet, richly illustrated with color reproductions of 16th and 19th-century masterpieces, also satisfies literary interests (French, English, German).
