■ Overview
Editor-in-Chief: Akira Suei
The core of the photo pages was Nobuyoshi Araki.
Prominent photographers such as Daido Moriyama, Seiji Kurata, and Keizo Kitajima also published their works.
According to Araki, the magazine's name originated when he and Suei were drinking in Shinjuku and the topic of "Keisetsu Jidai" (a study guide magazine) came up. The conversation then expanded to "It's the era of photography now," leading to the name "Shashin Jidai."
Moriyama stated that for eight years in the 1980s, he did almost no work other than his series in this magazine.
Moriyama made his presence known with his grainy black and white photographs, while Kurata captured the raw essence of Kabukicho and yakuza.
Other contributors included Shigesato Itoi, Takashi Ueno, Dan Takasugi, Shinbo Minami, Kazuhiro Watanabe, Kyoko Okazaki, and Kaoruko Himeno.
The "Chōgeijutsu Thomason" (Super-Art Thomason) series by Genpei Akasegawa, which was serialized in the magazine, became a boom, with numerous submitted photos of "objects that exist proudly despite being useless."
■ Discontinuation
Due to its radical expressions, the magazine received warnings from the Metropolitan Police Department several times and was discontinued with the April 1988 issue.
