■ Product Supplementary Explanation ■"Shashin Jidai" (Photo Age) is a magazine published by Byakuya Shobo.
First published in 1981.
■ OverviewEditor-in-Chief: Akira Suei
The core of the photography section was Nobuyoshi Araki.
Renowned photographers such as Daido Moriyama, Seiji Kurata, and Keizo Kitajima also published their works.
According to Araki, the magazine's title originated when he and Suei were drinking in Shinjuku and the topic of "Keisetsu Jidai" (a study guide magazine) came up. From there, the conversation evolved to "It's the era of photography now," leading to the name "Shashin Jidai."
Moriyama stated that he did almost no work other than his serializations in this magazine for eight years in the 1980s.
Moriyama made his presence known with his grainy black and white photographs, while Kurata captured the raw pulse of Kabukicho and the yakuza.
Other contributors included Shigesato Itoi, Takashi Ueno, Dan Takasugi, Shinbo Minami, Kazuhiro Watanabe, Kyoko Okazaki, and Kaoruko Himeno.
The "Chō-geijutsu Thomason" (Super-Art Thomason) series by Genpei Akasegawa, which was serialized in the magazine, became a boom, with numerous submissions from readers of "objects that exist proudly for no apparent purpose."
■ DiscontinuationDue to the radical expressions by Araki and others, the magazine received warnings from the Metropolitan Police Department several times and was discontinued with the April 1988 issue.---Management Number: b-9→b-10→b-11
