【孔雀明王】
孔雀の背に乗る優美な姿、怒れる明王の紅一点。
語源は「偉大なる孔雀」の意味で、インドの国鳥でもある孔雀が神格化され仏教に取り入れられました。
インドでは元々は女神でした。そのため、仏母大孔雀明王菩薩とも呼ばれ像容も女性的にあらわされます。
古代インドでは毒蛇は煩悩にたとえられており、毒蛇を捕らえて食べる孔雀が災いや苦痛を取り除いてくれると考えられていました。また孔雀が雨季の到来を告げることから、恵みの雨をもたらす吉鳥ということで大変尊重されました。
孔雀が仏教に取り入れられてからも雨乞いの儀式に用いられました。
また煩悩や苦悩、恐怖などを追い払って幸福をもたらす明王として信仰され人気を集めました。
