A new gem compilation by Pavement!
Pavement is a legendary band in the US alternative and lo-fi scenes, with a large fanbase not only worldwide but also in Japan. In 2022, they reunited, and in the following year, 2023, they held a Japan tour. Recently, a documentary film titled "Pavements" was announced, sparking buzz among fans about potential new developments. The band’s soundtrack for this film, along with a new best-of album titled "HecklersChoice," is released from Matador Records.
Pavement consists of five members:
- Stephen Malkmus
- Spiral Stairs (Scott Kannenberg)
- Steven Marquas
- Bob Nastanovich
- Steve West
They debuted in the 1990s underground scene in America and are one of the most beloved bands of that era. They released five defining albums:
- "Slanted & Enchanted" (1992)
- "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" (1994)
- "Wowee Zowee" (1995)
- "Brighten the Corners" (1997)
- "Terror Twilight" (1999)
The band disbanded in 1999. They reunited in 2022, headlined Primavera Sound, and performed multiple sold-out shows in Los Angeles, New York, and London. In 2023, they held a Japan tour for the first time in 13 years, successfully performing two shows in Tokyo and one in Osaka.
Incredible as it may seem, they have finally reached this point: sold-out reunion shows, a gold record, and a critically acclaimed feature film. The treasure born in Stockton, California, has reclaimed its throne. Still, many people might be asking, "Who are they?" That’s why Matador Records is releasing Pavement’s second best-of album, "HecklersChoice." When their previous best-of, "QuarantinethePast," was released in 2010, TikTok did not even exist. The newly curated tracklist includes songs that became viral hits afterward (such as "Harness Your Hopes") and features timeless classics that have remained staples in playlists and mixtapes across generations.
The soundtrack for the film "Pavements" was edited by producer/editor Robert Green and the band, compiling various elements—fragments of dialogue, scenes from the faux biopic "Range Life" aiming for an Oscar, cast recordings from the jukebox musical "Slanted! Enchanted!", as well as live and rehearsal recordings from the 2021 reunion tour. The full-band performances were mixed by Bryce Goggin, who worked on Pavement’s acclaimed albums like "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain," "Wowee Zowee," and "Brighten the Corners."
