Depending on the region, white lanterns without pictures are used for Bon lanterns. These white lanterns are used only in the year of the Shinbon and are disposed of after Obon.

【About Obon】
Obon is a traditional event to welcome the spirits of ancestors and loved ones who have passed away into this world. It begins with the "迎え火" (Welcoming Fire) and ends with the "送り火" (Sending Fire).
Within households, lanterns are arranged as Welcoming and Sending Fires to honor the spirits of ancestors and deceased family members. Since it is the time when ancestors return once a year, do your best to welcome them within your means.
Traditionally,
white lanterns for Shinbonwere prepared by the family of the deceased, while
decorative Bon lanterns (used annually) with pictures were generally prepared by relatives or acquaintances. However, due to recent changes in living environments, the placement and space for decoration have shifted from Buddhist altars to living rooms and other areas, leading families of the deceased to
prepare all lanterns and Bon supplies themselves, while relatives and acquaintances tend to offer offerings (cash, incense, etc.).Furthermore, the timing for starting to decorate varies by household. While the decoration is centered around the 13th (the first day of Obon) to the 16th (final day), many start decorating gradually during the Obon month (July or August) to avoid rushing on the day itself.
