But Martin also weaves in a compelling level of Kate Bush-like strength and Cure-esque detachment. The songwriting is equally impressive. "I can't judge a lover by their love / Just like you can't judge the sky by the thunder," is the opening line to "Beautiful Life," and a similar meditative concept flows through the first single, "Every Time It Rains," another lyrical and memorable tune. The only cover is a gentle take on the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses." This is a bonus track that dispels any notion that Martin is merely a "fluff" performer. Best of all, this CD predicts the coming of the female singer/songwriter era. Instead of dumbing down songs, playing the part of the contemporary female pop singer, or worse, trapping us in a mellow haze where we have to find our own pulse, Martin's music precisely probes her own interior. She makes us think. And along the way, she doesn't push us aside.
