Meshell, who was able to take time to deeply engage with music during the pandemic, says about this, her Blue Note debut, "I've always loved seeing the Blue Note logo on records. The word 'jazz' is very heavy for me, but I'm very moved to be able to join this label that pursues self-expression. This album expresses how to look at old things in new ways, and everything started moving when my parents passed away. After my parents' death, everything changed rapidly, and my own way of seeing things changed in an instant. While organizing my parents' belongings, I found the first Real Book (sheet music collection of jazz standard songs) my father gave me. It's what I listened to, learned, and grew up remembering. And, having experienced life, I enter the world of imagination and immerse myself in listening to music."
She has previously appeared on Blue Note releases such as Robert Glasper's "Black Radio" and Jason Moran's "All Rise," but this is the first time she is releasing an album under her own name on Blue Note.
