Urasaki Eisaku, a Western-style painter and Chairman of Daichokai, also known as the author of "History of the Development of Modern Japanese Art," passed away at 2:25 AM on August 29th at a hospital in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, due to senile pneumonia. He was 91 years old.Born in Naha, Okinawa, in 1900 (Meiji 33).Moved to Tokyo in 1921 (Taisho 10) and enrolled in Kawabata School of Fine Arts.Studied Western painting under Fujishima Takeji, while also obtaining an elementary school teacher's license through examination.Became an art teacher at a night industrial school, teaching freehand drawing, technical drawing, and advanced geometry.Also interested in researching and collecting literature related to art, he quit teaching in 1930 (Showa 5) and published the magazine "Bijutsu Kai" (Art World). At the same time, he conducted research on materials from the Meiji period. In 1935 (Showa 10), he established Daito Kai as a venue for art educators to exhibit their works. In response to requests for its continuation, the organization evolved and was dissolved, leading to the formation of Daichokai the following year (Showa 8).He advocated for works based on realism as healthy art, proposing it as the art that art educators should pursue, and championed providing a platform for its exhibition as his activity.He continued to lead the organization after the war and later assumed the position of Chairman of Daichokai.While exhibiting his works at Daichokai, he published "History of the Development of Modern Japanese Art - Meiji Period" (Tokyo Bijutsu) in 1974 (Showa 49), based on detailed materials concerning Meiji-period art.His meticulousness in collecting materials is highly regarded.
