■営団千代田線及び国鉄常磐緩行線乗り入れ用として製造されたのが9000形でした。小田急で初の界磁チョッパ制御、前面デザインの小田急パターンの脱却、側窓の1段降下窓採用などを図った野心的な車両でした。地下鉄線内での勾配区間を走破するため、先頭電動車を基本として電動車の比率を高めています。昭和47年から乗入準備のために製造が開始され完成した車両から順次地上運用に就きました。千代田線との直通運転が開始されたのが昭和53年、ただし小田急線側での複々線化工事が遅れたことから綾瀬駅から先の常磐緩行線乗り入れは実現しませんでした。その後、1990年には1000形に譲って千代田線乗り入れから撤退、以降、2005年の引退まで地上運用がメインとなります。結局、小田急とJR東日本が千代田線経由でそれぞれの路線を行き来するのは3代目直通車両である新4000形とE233系1000番台の時代になってからのことになります。
