■小田急の戦前～終戦直後製の旧型電車の走行機器を流用、車体と制御機器、台車のみを新製した機器流用車です。大手私鉄でも昔は機器流用車はポピュラーな存在で、車体は新しいのに走行音が古い吊り掛け駆動で、流用したMGの出力不足から非冷房だったりと細かいところで新車との違いがありました。ただ、機器流用車の東武5000系では吊り掛け駆動で冷房完備と、旅客サービス面では8000系と遜色ない車両もあったりと会社によりけりでした。小田急では車体長において時代遅れになっていた2400形の走行機器を4000形に移植、同時に冷房改造を施して新性能化を行って延命を図っています。他社の類似車両のほとんどが使い潰されたことを考えると長命だったと言えます
