The heartwood is clearly distinguished, with the sapwood being yellowish-white and the heartwood ranging from dark purple-brown to black.
The wood is extremely hard and dense, making it difficult to work with.
The surface of the wood is dense, uniform, and has a glossy finish.
The wood surface has a slight oily feel.
It is used in woodwind instruments such as oboes and clarinets because of its good acoustic resonance and suitability for lathe work.
Other uses include pen barrels, knife handles, walking sticks, and inlay work.
It closely resembles ebony (Diospyros species), but African Blackwood belongs to the Leguminosae family and is related to rosewood and other similar woods.
It is harder than ebony and has a smoother surface.
