「信長の野望」は、シリーズ戦国時代を舞台にした戦略シミュレーション。本作は、2001年にパソコン版で登場した第9弾のXbox版。移植作ではあるが、追加シナリオも収録されている。
プレイヤーは、戦国時代の大名の1人となり、内政や戦闘、外交をくり返しながら、領土を広げ、日本列島54国135城の統一を図る。本作にて登場する武将数は1300人以上。前作までと大きく異なるのは、ターン制の戦闘方式だったものがリアルタイム制となった点。また、複数部隊の組み合わせによる陣形での戦闘など、新しい合戦システムが導入されている。
グラフィックも凝っていてリアルタイムに戦況が変化するため、陣形を変化させながら部隊が進軍する3D戦闘シーンは、人間くさい合戦模様を感じさせる。用意されている武将のほかにも、「武将エディタ」によって、自由に新たな武将を作り出すこともできる。シナリオは、オリジナルにさらに5本追加した10本を収録。（林田信浩）
