Description:This is a tatami mat cover made from 100% igusa (Japanese rush) grown in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, using reduced pesticide cultivation. Its features include:* Superior durability and elasticity compared to regular igusa, and the characteristic green color of igusa lasts longer.* Even when faded by sun exposure, it develops a beautiful amber color.* It has the ability to absorb nitrogen dioxide, which contributes to air pollution, and also works effectively to regulate room humidity.
Simply laying this cover over your tatami room can refresh it. Use it to refresh sun-faded tatami or as a protective cover for new tatami to prevent stains.
This product uses domestic igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, a region known for igusa production) with a length of 130cm or more, classified as JAS Class 1 (a high-class tatami facing). The carefully selected, high-quality, thick, and long igusa is woven at high density, making it durable and providing a comfortable volume against the skin. Approximately 95cm of the 135cm length is used. This is a premium product made with long igusa, resulting in less white space near the trim. (The white areas are not due to sun exposure; they are the colors of the root and tip of the igusa.)
Longer igusa is considered more premium. Igusa has a reddish-brown tip, a white root, and a green middle section. Using more of the high-quality green middle section results in a stronger and more beautiful finish. As igusa ages and is exposed to sunlight, it fades. Products using more of the green middle section will fade evenly and beautifully, developing a unique character over time.
This product is finished with Itobiki-ori, the same weaving method used for tatami facings. Compared to Somoku-ori (double weave), Itobiki-ori has a higher density of igusa, making it more durable. Its smooth surface makes it difficult for dust to accumulate. Itobiki-ori is recommended for those who want to use the product for a long time or require high durability.
We use domestic igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture). Domestic igusa stalks are thick, and their outer layer is dense and finely textured, providing elasticity and excellent durability. Igusa has air-purifying and humidity-regulating properties, and is resistant to dirt.
"Hiba essence," extracted from Hiba trees in Aomori Prefecture, is applied to the fabric surface using the manufacturer's unique technology. Hiba essence contains hinokitiol, a natural substance with extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects.)
Both sides of the product can be used, making it economical.
