しめ縄は、神様が降りた神聖な場所を示すもの。
これが張ってあるところには、不浄のものや悪霊は入れないとされていて、一種の防御壁・魔除けの役割も果たしています。しめ縄飾りを玄関に飾るのは、ここが歳神様を迎える家だということを表すためなのです。
お正月準備の開始日は、大掃除の起源とされるすす払いの日（12月13日）と言われています。
そのため、13日から31日の間に飾り始め、松の内の1月8日に飾り終えるのが正しい飾り方になります。
※松の内（1月1日〜7日。地域によっては15日まで）
ただ、29日は二重苦、31日は一日飾りと呼ばれ、縁起が良くない日とされています。
※29日を「ふく」と読み福を呼ぶとするところもあります。
