ニンテンドーDS版として登場の大人気「スーパーマリオブラザーズ」シリーズ。ファミコン時代のスーパーマリオシリーズを継承していて、3D空間の冒険ではなくて、2D横スクロールアクション。操作方法も、基本的に「十字ボタン＋ふたつのボタン」のシンプル操作で、いろいろなアクションをこなす。
もちろん冠にニューがつくだけあって、新要素も。画面いっぱいの大きさまで巨大化する巨大マリオになると、ブロックや敵をぶっとばすのは当然だが、土管などのマップギミックまでふっとばして突き進む。豆粒大になるミニマリオもかわいい。他にも新しいアクションやギミックがあるが、どれも新奇さを狙うのではなく、自然な感じで導入されているところが凄い。
ぼくは、アクションゲームが苦手なので、ワールド5あたりから苦戦してなかなかスイスイとは進めなくなってきたが、救済策も随所に隠されていて、プレイしていると新しい発見があって楽しい。マリオシリーズのファンにはもちろんオススメだし、アクションゲーム初心者だけどちょっと手応えのあるものにチャレンジしたいって人にもオススメだ。
