幼少期に父母を失い、小学校を2年で退学し、22歳(明治17年)時に二度目の上京をし、東京大学理学部植物学教室への自由な出入りを許され、そのまま、東京大学理学部の嘱託、助手、講師となり、一方、莫大な借金を背負いながら、日々、植物研究にまい進する富太郎の熱情が、富太郎自身の口から縦横に語られます。
新訂版では、幅広い読者が自然に読めるように、漢字表記を現代仮名遣いに準じて改め、小学校中学年以上の読者が楽に読めるように、ルビを大幅に増やし(ほぼ総ルビです!)、句読点も現代のスタイル
