2018年、民法の成年年齢を20歳から18歳に引き下げる改正法が成立したことに関連し、2021年5月、少年法は、大きな改正がなされた。すなわち、18歳、19歳の少年は特定少年とされ、引き続き少年法を適用することとされた一方で、いわゆる原則逆送対象事件の拡大、推知報道禁止規定の一部適用除外、虞犯の適用除外など、17歳以下の少年とは異なるさまざまな特例が定められた。 第４版では、上記の少年法改正を踏まえ、改正に至る経緯、具体的な改正点や活動の際の注意点等を整理したほか、特殊詐欺や性非行などの特徴的類型を加筆するとともに、全体的にブラッシュアップを図った。
