Born in Takefu City, Fukui Prefecture in 1918. Graduated from Tokyo Prefectural Sixth Girls' High School. During her studies, she studied under the Western-style painter Saburosuke Okada. Later, she studied oil painting under the painter Yasushi Nakatani.
1961: Received the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award for "A-I-U-E-O no Hon" (Doshinsha).
1965: Co-founded the children's illustration group "Kuruma" with Jiro Takidaira, Koichi Kume, Teruyo Endo, and others. Exhibitions have been held annually since then.
1972: Received the first prize for graphic design at the Bologna International Children's Book Fair for "Kotori no Kuru Hi" (Shiko-sha).
1974: Received the Bronze Prize at the Leipzig International Book Fair for "Senka no Naka no Kodomotachi" (Iwasaki Shoten). Passed away in Tokyo on August 8th at the age of 55.
1975: Her last work, "Akai Rōsoku to Ningyo" (Doshinsha), was published in May.
Other works include picture books such as "E no Nai Ehon," "Watashi ga Chiisai Toki ni," "Ai Kagiri Naku," "Manyo no Uta," "Hana no Dowa Shu" (all Doshinsha), "Ame no Hi no Orusuban," "Akachan no Kuru Hi," "Tonari ni Kita Ko" (all Shiko-sha), and "Watashi no Ehon" (Kodansha). Art collections include "Kodomo no Shiawase Gashu," "Hana to Kodomo no Gashu," "Hisano Hoshi," and "Senka no Naka no Kodomotachi" (all Iwasaki Shoten).
