**"Kokeshi dolls"** are traditional wooden dolls from the Tohoku region.There are mainly three categories:- **Traditional Kokeshi:** A craft that has been continued for over 160 years. There are 12 styles, each named after their place of origin. Kokeshi craftsmen, after several years of training under a master, can create dolls belonging to their respective style.- **Shingata Kokeshi (New-style Kokeshi):** Started in the 1950s as souvenirs from hot spring areas. They come in many designs, featuring motifs such as famous sightseeing spots, landscapes, or local specialties.- **Sosaku Kokeshi (Creative Kokeshi):** Since there are no specific regulations or definitions, they feature a wide variety of designs.
In particular, **"Traditional Kokeshi"** were toys for children before industrial products appeared. Because they were used for playing house, carrying, piggybacking, and as friends, they were made with simple shapes consisting only of a head and body to prevent breakage.
