The protagonist, Kei Tsushima, once attended a prestigious high school but dropped out due to certain circumstances. He now attends a night school. Although he has deviated from the shortest path of 'succeeding his parents and becoming a doctor,' he can still recover. However, recently, he's been thinking, 'Is this really okay?'
He met a wide variety of people at night school, people unlike anyone he'd known before. He realized there were many things in the world he didn't know... But is it okay to go back again? Do I really want to become a doctor? Is that my purpose in life, as Kei Tsushima?
Amidst this, a novel he submitted to a city contest leads to an offer from the president of a music production company, Yagihara: 'Will you accompany our band on their tour and write a report?' The band he is to cover is 'Kachou Fuugetsu,' which was once active in the major leagues. Their leader, Korekiyo Hanai, is quite eccentric and lectures Kei extensively on the meaninglessness of music, saying, 'Music is nothing good.'
While bewildered by Hanai, Kei is captivated by Kachou Fuugetsu's music at his first live performance. A few days later, Kei, unable to forget the感動 of his first live performance, receives news of 'Kachou Fuugetsu's disbandment.' Unable to accept the sudden disbandment, Kei goes to persuade Hanai, but their discussion goes in circles and reaches no conclusion. Even after that, whenever they meet, Kei asks for the band to restart, and Hanai says this:
