This performance was staged in Munich in June 2008. The venue was the Cuvilliés Theatre, not the usual National Theatre. Opened in 1753, this historic theatre is also the former Court Opera House where "Idomeneo" premiered in 1781. With a capacity of only about 500 people, this is an exceptionally luxurious production. This "Idomeneo" was a commemorative performance for the reopening of the theatre after renovations. The conductor is Nagano, Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera. He creates music so fresh and vibrant that it makes you marvel at how such a modern orchestra can perform Mozart with such vitality.The title role is performed by Ainslie, a leading Mozart tenor from Britain, who captivates with his commanding voice and acting. Iphigenia is sung by Banse, a soprano praised for her beautiful voice and intelligence, even by Mr. Hidekazu Yoshida. For the role of Electra, a part often taken by mezzo-sopranos or veteran sopranos, the production boldly cast Dash, a young and energetic soprano. This twin-soprano casting works exceptionally well in this production. Idamante is sung by the Czech tenor Brieslik. The decision not to cast a male-disguised mezzo-soprano, as is common today, is likely due to directorial reasons. Brieslik, who is rapidly gaining prominence, is perfectly suited for Idamante with his unpretentious appearance and excellent vocal abilities.Although performed in the premiere theatre, this is Munich, and the staging is not retro. Dorn's direction creates a stage that seems to superimpose the Trojan War with modern civic revolutions, successfully bringing a raw drama to "Idomeneo."[Comment provided by: King International]
